The Lost King

The Lost King is a British comedy-drama that was co-written by Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) and directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena). The movie is based on the amazing true account of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), who defied the stuffy academic establishment in her quest to locate King Richard III’s remains, which had been missing for more than 500 years.

The discovery of such ancient ruins and other artefacts in a parking lot in Leicester, England, is quite bizarre. As always, Sally Hawkins (‘The Shape of Water’) is incredibly captivating as Philippa and essentially carries the movie. Since people have preconceived notions about both her and the King, Philippa really draws parallels between herself and Richard III and swears to dispel such notions.

Although Langley has indicated that the academics had marginalised and sidelined her, many characters are depicted in a less than favourable light in this historical perspective, as is the case with all historical interpretations. It might not have the same emotional depth as “Philomena,” but it’s still a heartwarming and inspiring story.
