AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania (2023): 7/10
Director: Peyton Reed
Runtime: 125mins
⠀
The fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is introduced in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which also marks the first appearance of Jonathan Majors’ more frightening Kang The Conqueror. Scott, Hope, Hank, Janet, and Cassie unintentionally enter the Quantum Realm and find themselves face to face with Kang and other bizarre beings.
⠀
The Lang/Pym/Van Dyne story is mostly set aside in Quantumania to make room for Phase and world-building, which results in a less “Ant-Man” feel than in earlier installments. However, the movie still features a lot of the same humour we have grown to love from the “Ant-Man” movies – Paul Rudd’s comedic timing is spot on as usual. The Quantum Realm is a large, colourful universe with several intriguing characters that is reminiscent of “Star Wars” and oddly “Spy Kids 3D.” Quaz and Veb will undoubtedly appeal to Marvel fans.
⠀
Kang, played by Majors, delivers a standout performance and will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the MCU. Similar to the threat posed by Thanos, Phase Four lacked consistency and intensity; maybe, a grand awful story will help to make up for that. There has been much discussion about the MCU’s recent decline in quality, and “Quantumania” doesn’t really do anything new with its conventional plot and script and shoddy CGI. Despite this, the trip is generally delightful and enjoyable.
