What are video nasties, please?

In the UK, the term “Video Nasties” was used in the early to mid-1980s to describe overly bloody and violent movies that were released on videotape. These movies caused a moral panic in society because people thought they would inspire the next wave of murderers. The concern was that minors would obtain these tapes and repeatedly watch the violence, unlike at a theatre where the audience could be supervised. These movies were also blamed for the correspondingly rising crime rates (at the time). Every Video Nasty was screened by censors, who then decided whether to ban it or approve it with many cuts.

Movie Censor Meaning

In this interview, the director of Censor says that there was some hypocrisy surrounding the idea of censors. The authorities assumed that while seeing these violent pictures could degrade the morality of the general people, it wouldn’t have the same effect on the censors. Enid, a censor, and the effects of her employment are followed throughout the film.

The Story of the Censorship Film

Censor Movie Explained -Plot And Ending Explained

The most important issue raised by the film is one that I believe needs to be addressed, but sadly, there isn’t any concrete proof either way.

What happened to Nina, censor? Nina’s murder by Enid?

Certainly, Enid was responsible for Nina’s death, but this has been erased from her conscious memory. As a child, Enid brought Nina to a forest and encouraged her to explore farther. Nina may not have been hacked to death by Enid, but Nina was killed because of something Enid made her do.

Because of the immense shame she feels in her heart, we know the trauma was so severe that Enid has been unable to recall it. As a result, it’s unlikely that Nina was abducted because Enid would not alone be to blame. My best assumption is that Enid persuaded Nina to stray from the designated trail, and as a result, Nina harmed herself, maybe losing consciousness. Enid likely departed the region after becoming overwhelmed with shame and horror. Nina may have been unconscious but still alive at that time, and Enid is convinced that Nina is still alive today. Repressed memories are undoubtedly a possibility when such significant guilt is involved.

Why was Nina’s corpse never discovered?

Enid’s trauma causes her to forget the incident and the specifics of their location. She is therefore unable to recall anything when her parents and the police try to question her. Nina was never found despite efforts to find her because it was unknown how far into the forest the girls travelled and where they went.

Enid

Years go by, and Enid is now a censor who takes her job quite seriously. She views herself to be a protector of people and is exact and meticulous. Enid is still convinced Nina is alive and that she will eventually be found. We can picture Enid going up to a lot of redheads in one scene, hoping it’s Nina. The death certificate for Nina, which is dated the day of her abduction, is prepared by Enid’s parents in an effort to provide closure. This infuriates Enid, who protests by claiming, “I would have known if she was dead.” Again, this suggests that Nina may have been alive when Enid abandoned her in the jungle.

The importance of censorship, The Amnesiac Killer, and the deranged

Enid occurs to watch the movie Deranged, which features sequences in which a person eats the faces of his victims. Sadly, someone eats his wife’s face after killing his wife. According to the media, the crime was influenced by the movie, and the censors are to blame for approving it. There are three reasons why this arc is important.

To shield oneself from trauma, a mind might suppress or wipe out some parts of an experience. Both Enid and the Amnesiac Killer’s minds have done this.
The murderer eventually admits in court that he had never seen the movie Deranged. This demonstrates how society attacked the movie and the censors because they already believed that movies would inspire criminal behaviour, and all they wanted was a chance to claim, “See, it occurred!”
Enid, who defends others, has erred, and as she considers these films, this leads her to question who she is and her morals. This is the initial blow that causes those repressed memories to surface.

Avoid entering the church. Alice Lee, Doug Smart, and Fredrick North

Doug Smart, a producer, pays a visit to Enid one day and requests that she see Don’t Go In The Church, one of his movies. He says that Fedrick North, the director, wanted a woman to watch the movie. Enid watches the movie as part of her job. In it, two sisters are walking through a forest when one of them implores the other to go into a cabin. The older sister then grabs an axe, breaks into the home, and kills her younger sister.

Enid leaves the showing to vomit as memories of her own time spent in the woods with Nina flood back. Enid’s experience with her sister matching the sights in Don’t Go In The Church is purely coincidence, just as The Amnesiac Killer happened to devour his wife’s face identical to the killings in Deranged despite the fact that he had never seen the movie.

Enid hears a whimper on the walk home and follows it into the shadows. This moment suggests that Enid is currently slipping deeper into the shadows of her mind. Her mother starts accusing her of killing Nina in her nightmares, which she starts to have.

Enid visits a video store in search of other Fredrick North productions and purchases the movie Asunder. Alice Lee, an actress, has a similar appearance to Enid, leading Enid to suspect that Alice is Nina, her long-lost sister. When Enid tells her parents about this, they immediately express their frustration with her fruitless hunt for Nina. We can see that her father continues to attribute Enid’s abduction to Nina.

Censor: Did Doug get killed by Enid?

Enid does inadvertently kill Doug, but her mind erases that memory. There is nothing sinister going on here, even though Doug is a womaniser. In the sequel to Don’t Go In The Church, directed by Fredrick North and taking place close to Fred’s home, Alice Lee plays the lead role. Doug doesn’t believe Alice will have a bright future, thus this will be her final movie. Enid, who is on the verge of going insane, believes that Alice will be murdered by the cast and crew after the movie. Doug is accidently impaled on his prize when Enid pushes him after he advances on her.

Enid imagines that Doug is calling her at home, but this is all in her head. Pay attention to how Doug’s voice says, “He is shooting a delicious sequel,” at random. Sentences in Doug’s voice are coming from Enid’s head.

Did Nina in Censor get kidnapped by Frederick North?

No, Alice is not Nina; Fredrick is merely a director with Alice. Enid drives over after stealing Fredrick’s address. The actress who played Alice Lee’s sister in Don’t Go In The Church 2 has not appeared, which is a coincidence. The makeup artist takes Enid inside after mistaking her for that actress due to Enid’s likeness to Alice. The makeup artist also remarks that it’s odd that Doug didn’t come up because he never misses a graphic murder scene, providing further evidence that Doug has passed away. Fredrick favours using natural materials to create an atmosphere and then using the intensity that results to drive his scenes.

Fredrick is not talking to Enid’s narrative when he mentions that the sisters scene was based on a true story. In all honesty, Fredrick thinks Enid is his cast. Enid, though, finds it to be all too real given the entire scenario.

Censor: Did Enid kill Beastman and Frederick North?

Yeah, she ends the lives of Beastman and Fredrick. Enid is directed to the cabin by Fredrick, the setting for his movie sequence. Charles, who plays Beastman, greets Enid as she enters by giving her a hug. Enid defends her sister and uses the axe to attack Charles when she notices Beastman holding Alice. When Enid attacks him, Charles yells, “This is not in the script!” Alice’s look indicates that she is also perplexed by Enid’s approach with the axe. Enid is now used to seeing things in the over-the-top blood and gore of Video Nasties.

The message on Beastman’s heart reads, “I am the horror,” suggesting that people already harbour dread in their hearts and that films do not bring it about. She then imagines Enid killing Fredrick in a fit of wrath, which is equally ridiculous. Enid follows Alice as she flees the area.

Why a Movie’s Ending Was Censored

The conclusion of the film Censor reveals that Enid has gone fully insane and that her perception has been so affected by her grief over Nina’s murder that she has created an entirely fictitious happy ending for herself. Take note of how the shots beginning when Enid arrives at the shooting location start to have a tighter aspect ratio. By the time the film ends, the aspect ratio has changed to 4:3, just like ancient TV sets. Even the colour scheme changes from modern film to an 80s vibe. This framing shift takes place as Enid’s mental state begins to deteriorate.

After that, Enid enters the utopian parallel reality she had created, where Alice has returned and is posing as Nina. The two girls happily run through the forest, and everyone is happy when Enid returns Nina to her parents.

The video nasties have been fully eliminated, according to the news. Britain’s crime rate has actually reached zero. As we have stated, Britain’s streets are finally safe. A record high employment rate has been reached. All of the criminals are confined. This is as far away from the truth as Enid is from sanity. The too happy scenes are intercut with glimpses of reality that depict Alice and Enid’s parents suffering as a result of Enid’s murderous rampage, and then the movie ends.
