Netflix has the 2019 film “I Lost My Body,” which was released. The film’s primary character is a hand that is searching for its way back to its body. The Addams Family’s “Thing” may come to mind, but this film isn’t funny; it’s more about clinging to the past. I advise you to view it. I’ll give away some of the movie’s story points and the resolution if you continue reading.
What’s the plot of I Lost My Body?
The ups and downs of life are the focus of this film. It demonstrates that you may gradually get through difficult experiences, such as losing a loved one. The narrative is presented from the viewpoint of a severed hand that can recall its owner’s past. The film’s conclusion, in which everyone advances, is depicted from a different angle.
The movie uses a lot of analogies, but I won’t go into them all here because they can get rather personal. I’ll mention a few, and if you’d like, we can talk about the remaining ones in the comments.
What does the severed hand in I Lost My Body represent?
The Fly and the Past in I Lost My Body
In the movie, the fly is a warning sign. Pay attention to it whenever you see it, especially when something negative is going to occur. Naoufel cherishes the experience of capturing flies as it serves as a reminder of earlier times. He recalls his father once attempting to teach him how to catch a fly when he was a young child. As a result of the conversation with his father, he develops a slight obsession with fly-catching.
Only a few other items from the past, except the fly, remain dear to Naoufel:
- The recordings on the tapes and the recorder, particularly the video of the collision that killed his parents. Naoufel feels bad since she believes the accident was her fault.
I Lost My Hand| The Tale of Naoufel’s Plan is Described
When Naoufel was a young child, he unintentionally distracted his father as they were driving, which resulted in a vehicle accident that claimed the lives of both of his parents. Following that, he was raised by a foster family. But as he became older, he still felt lost and unable to let go of the past.
One day, while making a pizza delivery, he engages in conversation with Gabrielle over the intercom. He slips and hurts himself, so he can’t meet her and deliver the pizza. Naoufel gradually begins to feel affection for Gabrielle.

Being fairly talkative, Gabrielle occasionally brings up her employment. Since not everyone converses in-depthly with their tardy pizza delivery person while they consume the undelivered pizza, we don’t learn a lot about her personality or life experiences.
Naoufel begins to stalk Gabrielle in a somewhat unnerving manner, including running into her uncle Gigi at the latter’s place of employment. Naoufel acts as though he is looking for work in order to get Gigi to take him on as his apprentice.
As Gabrielle and Naoufel get to know one another better, she tells him about her dream of experiencing an igloo. Naoufel therefore improves his carpentry abilities and constructs a wooden igloo for her. He asks her around for supper one night. They are inside the igloo when Naoufel makes an even creepier claim, claiming to be the pizza delivery man from the previous evening. When Gabrielle learns that Naoufel has been abusing her ailing and elderly uncle, she is naturally furious and disgusted. She turns away from him in disgust and despair.
He loses his Hand
Naoufel is inconsolable. Without parental guidance, he was raised and only really knew his foster brother. He makes an attempt to be chivalrous in his own manner, but fails spectacularly in the process. He then surprisingly engages in a fistfight at his brother’s party because he is fed up with being bullied.
Listening to his collection of old tapes is one activity that Naoufel enjoys. He overhears the account of the accident that killed his parents one day while listening. Although he takes off his father’s watch, he wears it. He wears the watch to the workshop the following day, but he is too preoccupied attempting to catch a fly to realise that the machine is in motion.
The fact that your college workshop instructors made you run around the block as punishment for wearing a watch is worth mentioning. Wearing the watch in Naoufel’s case turns out to be a bad decision because it becomes stuck in the machine and slashes his hand.
locating his route
Naoufel gets angrier throughout the coming days and weeks. When Gigi offers to assist him with some insurance paperwork, Naoufel is unappreciative and rude. Through a recording that Gabrielle is listening to, the most intense scene in the film is revealed in the third person. Naoufel advises Gabrielle to adopt a very unanticipated and surprising move and to stay with it if she wants to avoid fate. At the outset, he tells Gabrielle about this. For the first time in his life, Naoufel resolves to put this theory into practise:
To avoid doom, he makes a daring jump from the roof onto some nearby scaffolding.
In order to let go of the past, he overlays the tape from the day of the accident with the recording from this new incident.He is successful in his actions, and he then departs. The following morning, when Gabrielle walks into his room, she discovers that Naoufel has disappeared. She searches for the recorder on the roof using the igloo, and while she listens to it, she discovers what Naoufel did and that he has since gone on. Because she is a compassionate person, Gabrielle feels bad for Naoufel after the incident and goes to see how he is doing. She carries on with her life, sure that everything would be alright.
I Lost My Body| The Tale of the Hand
Particularly in this section, “I Lost My Body” is rife with analogies. The hand breaks free from its frozen prison, and as it moves from one spot to another, it feels as though it is swimming in a maelstrom. Similar to how Naoufel’s life took unforeseen turns after losing his family, destiny sometimes leads people in unexpected places.
The hand eventually finds itself on a rooftop, where it reluctantly uses an umbrella to leap into the unknown. Additionally, there is a toy astronaut that the hand interprets as a symbol of Naoufel’s inner fortitude. As the umbrella is being blown around, the hand clings to it.
Finally, the hand is carried by a gust of wind to the structure next to Naoufel’s room. The journey of the hand is poetically depicted, mirroring Naoufel’s personal journey and hardships.
I Lost My Body| The Explanation Ending
Naoufel and the hand realise they will never be whole again after they are reunited. Naoufel makes a successful leap at the conclusion of “I Lost My Body,” yelling as he does so. He realises that he is not constrained by fate and that everything he has done in his life, including working as a carpenter for Gabrielle, has simply been fate’s will. He understands that by holding onto his past, he has only caused himself more suffering and heartache. He wouldn’t have lost his hand if he hadn’t been wearing the watch or fixated on that location. While making his daring plunge, he simultaneously records the accident’s moment and liberates himself.
Most of the characters have moved on and found resolution by the film’s conclusion. Naoufel is aware that, whether it is trying something new or going back to his work with Gigi, he must always follow his heart.
Despite feeling somewhat guilty, Gabrielle is glad Naoufel did not commit suicide and is moving forward on a new road.
The hand, a symbolic figure, discerns that it cannot rejoin Naoufel and withdraws, understanding that he has moved on, and logically vanishes.
Given Naoufel’s loss of his hand and the fact that Gigi’s prior trainees deserted him after learning from him about carpentry, Gigi probably forgives Naoufel.
