Based on the Danish novel of the same name, Loving Adults (Kaerlighed for voksne), is a 2022 Danish crime drama directed by Barbara Topse-Rothenborg. The plot revolves around a couple who are having marital problems and a police officer who thinks there might have been a terrible crime. When the movie ends, we are left wondering: What was the point? There will be spoilers in this explanation of the Loving Adults movie’s narrative and conclusion.
Loving Adults | Detailed Conclusion
In the movie Loving Adults, which is about a police commissioner explaining his hypothesis to his daughter, who is soon to get married, the conclusion states that the entire plot is supposition. He tells her the tale to show her that love may be risky and that she should certainly consider twice before going down the aisle. Despite the Cop’s horrifying story, his daughter says she is prepared for marriage.
He told her that terrifying story right before her wedding—is he the worst parent ever?
We don’t know the history, so. We only know that the Cop lost his wife and that he seems to be quite attached to his daughter. Whether the Cop likes the groom or not, we don’t know anything about him. The Cop has seen a lot of horrifying cases when a loved adult couple has committed the crime. He feels it is his duty to warn his daughter to be cautious.
Did Leonora and Christian murder Xenia?
Because there is no proof that the Christian and Leonora killed Xenia, it is impossible to know. While Xenia is still gone and without her body, there is no way to definitively state anything, even though the Cop suspects the two of them.
Explaining Loving Adults: The Only Knowledge A Cop Has
1. A long time ago, a boy Leonora had cheated on died “mysteriously” by plunging to his death from a cliff, but Leonora had a strong alibi—she was at violin lesson.
2. In a hit-and-run with no leads, a mother of three was killed.
3. When Christian informs The Cop that he was working past his bedtime at the workplace, The Cop first sees Christian and Leonara at their home.
4. After Christian informs the cop that the night of the hit-and-run, he observed a foreign car, the cop receives a call from Leonara’s phone. Christian tells the Cop that the automobile was Romanian when they later cross paths.
5. Xenia goes missing as the Cop looks into a break-in at her home. The bedsheet has been changed, and the house has been thoroughly cleaned of all fingerprints.
6. The Cop learns that Christian was the sender of Xenia’s most recent communication, which began, “Dear Xenia. I apologise. This is something I cannot do. To me, my family is everything.
7. Christian and Leonora meet The Cop. They claim to have eaten in the room on the night of the break-in while staying at a hotel. Additionally, Christian acknowledges having an affair with Xenia and ending it.
8. After fruitless efforts to find Xenia’s body, the Cop observes Christian lighting the bonfire as part of the celebration.
Explaining Loving Adults: The Police Commissioner’s Version
The Cop has made the following assumptions. There is actual proof for a handful of the occurrences, which we’ll discuss later in the essay, but much of it cannot be proven.
The boy was pushed down the cliff, right?
The police officer believes that when Leonora was a young girl, she sneaked out of her violin lesson and killed her cheating boyfriend. He was pushed off the cliff by her. However, she timed her withdrawal from the class with a record playing in her place, fooling the teacher into thinking Leonora was present the entire time. No evidence exists for the murder.
What was the deception?
Later, after their son Johan is born with a medical issue, Leonora weds Christian and gives up her career as a violinist to care for him. Although the nature of the theft is not revealed to us, the Cop is of the opinion that Christian and his accomplice Peter stole money from the office to pay for Johan’s medical care.
We are never informed of the specifics of the scam or disease, and Leonora is a complicit party. No evidence of fraud is present.
Xenia’s identity is unknown?
At work, Christian begins dating a lady named Xenia. When Leonora learns about Xenia’s demands that Christian leave his wife, she urges that he break up with her immediately because otherwise she will report the fraud to the authorities. Christian acknowledges the relationship, and his text backs it up. What happened between the three, though, is simply a matter of conjecture.
The hit-and-run
Christian is suspected by the police officer of running over a mother of three while pretending to be Leonora. It so happens that on the day the other woman is run over and murdered, Leonora chooses a different path than she usually does. Christian is informed by the Cop that he arrived at the office after hours.
The Cop also hypothesises that Leonora will be able to obtain video of Christian washing his office van because when she subsequently goes to get her car washed, her card won’t have enough money on it because it was used the night of the hit-and-run.
Did the Cop also have access to the video from the vehicle wash?
This is most likely the film’s most perplexing element. Why didn’t the Cop go obtain the same film if he believed Leonora had access to incriminating material? A police officer could obtain it if a layperson could. Furthermore, given that Christian claimed to be at work that night, why didn’t the Cop question Christian after seeing the footage?
Are we to assume that the Cop had this full hypothesis years after the case was resolved? But nonetheless, wouldn’t he glance at the video to convince himself? Please leave a comment below if you have any thoughts on this.
The police were called
The Cop assumes Leonora will call him, but Christian snatches the phone away from her and pretends to have seen a foreign car the night of the hit-and-run. The Cop further hypothesises that Leonora then left and messaged Christian to arrange a meeting at a restaurant.
Why doesn’t Leonora file a report on Christian?
Leonora is thought to be the kind of person who would do anything to protect what is most important to her, according to the Cop. Their son would suffer and their lives would become miserable if she reported it to the authorities. Instead, Leonora suggests that the two of them come up with a strategy to assassinate Xenia, a threat to her life. There is no proof supporting this murderous scheme.
Murdering Xenia
There is evidence that Leonora and Christian check into a motel. The Cop speculates that Christian sneaks out of the room, walks over to Xenia’s house, and busts down her door. In order to fabricate an alibi, Leonora places a room service order while pretending to speak with her husband, who is in the shower. Christian is breaking up with her, she texts Xenia on Christian’s phone. Christian is unable to kill Xenia there, so they have sex instead.
Leonora predicts what would occur and visits Xenia’s house before killing her. After tidying up the area and wiping away all of the fingerprints, Christian and Leonora leave with Xenia’s body. After placing Xenia’s body in the prepared pyre, they sneak back to their hotel room. The damaged door is the only concrete evidence the Cop has; all else is conjecture.
Removing Xenia’s body from the scene
The police officer searches for Xenia’s body with dogs but comes up empty-handed. He believes that Xenia’s body was in the bonfire and was burned because he saw Christian and all of his pals there. Christian and Leonora then discarded her remains in the lake. The Cop still lacks evidence of Xenia’s burning.
This theory seems a little exaggerated to me as well. That bonfire didn’t seem to be nearly big enough to burn out a corpse and leave only bones behind. Burning the body would have made a much bigger stink than thinking it was a hedgehog.
If Christian and Leonora Were Not Guilty, According To Loving Adults
Years ago, Leonora’s boyfriend died in an accident after slipping and falling. There was no fraud at work. But Johan was ill and recovered after receiving treatment.
•Christian and Xenia are having an affair.
The random vehicle that committed the hit-and-run may have been from Romania.
Christian confirms this in person after Leonora and Christian tell the Cop this over the phone.
• Leonora and Christian check into a hotel, where they place an order and eat in their room. Christian breaks up with Xenia by sending her a message.
•Someone broke in and may have killed Xenia, sexually assaulted her, and then removed her body. Additionally, this unidentified person removed all of the house’s fingerprints. We don’t know where or how the body was disposed of. The body of Xenia was not in the bonfire.
