Malignant is a 2021 psychological-thriller horror film directed by James Wan, who gave us many of the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring movies. The main character of the movie is a lady who is plagued by murderous visions that seem to be related to the first eight years of her life, which she cannot recall. The principal ladies of the ensemble are Maddie Hasson and Annabelle Wallis. What works for one horror film may not always work for another; it’s a tough genre. So watch and decide for yourself whether you like the movie. Spoilers ahead for the Malignant movie’s narrative and conclusion.
Explaining the plot of the evil film
An dispute regarding Madison’s previous losses breaks out between her and her violent husband, Derek. Madison starts bleeding from the back of her skull as Derek loses his cool and slams her head against the wall.
A mysterious being kills Derek that evening, and Madison winds up in the hospital. As there is no sign of a break-in, Madison is put on suspicion. She soon starts seeing murders in her dreams, which further raises suspicions about her.
The investigation quickly discovers that Madison had previously gone by the name Emily and had been receiving treatment from Dr. Florence Weaver for a mental illness. Everyone who ever collaborated with Dr. Weaver to treat Emily is responsible for the slew of deaths Madison claims to have seen. When Emily was eight years old, she was ultimately adopted and changed her name to Madison.
When Madison receives a disturbing voicemail calling her Emily, she is reminded of her imagined childhood buddy Gabriel. Madison embarks on a quest to learn what exactly happened to her when she was a youngster and who Gabriel really is after realising that Gabriel is more than just her fantasy.
What ties Gabriel and Madison together? What is Emily’s real story?
Emily and Gabriel were conjoined twins who had a single brain when Madison was born. Gabriel acquired extraordinary abilities, including physical strength and the capacity to transmit thoughts across radio waves. Gabriel was far too powerful for Dr. Weaver to be able to give Emily complete control over her mind and body. Dr. Weaver, who has no other option, chooses to remove Gabriel’s physical body and seal a section of his head inside Emily’s in order to eliminate the cancer.
After this process, Gabriel goes dormant. A loving family adopts Emily and gives her the name Madison. At the beginning, Gabriel talks to Madison and makes up images to convince her to murder her unborn step sister. As Madison’s sister Sydney arrives, Gabriel is no longer needed by Madison and is buried in her mind, where he remains for the next 27 years. Gabriel is unsuccessful.
Serena MaY| Who is she? Exactly why was Emily placed for adoption?
Birth mother of Emily is Serena May. She was sexually assaulted and coerced into carrying the child to term. Serena discovered during the process that her two children are conjoint, and she views them as abominations. Serena gave away Emily+Gabriel since she was too young to care for her demon child and didn’t want to, and Dr. Weaver later adopted them.
Why did Gabriel come back now, all these years later?
Once Sydney was born, Gabriel went into dormancy. Gabriel is awakened when Derek bangs Madison’s head against the wall. Madison turns to confront Gabriel, who has taken over both his mind and body. Derek is the first person he murders that evening. Although it appears that Madison is being attacked by Gabriel to us, that is simply a delusion.

Gabriel has been responsible for murdering Madison’s unborn children and has been gradually regaining his strength over time.
What is Gabriel murdering, and who is he doing it for?
Gabriel is murdering every member of Dr. Weaver’s team, including her, in retaliation for cutting his limbs and organs and imprisoning him in Emily’s head.
How is Madison able to see Gabriel being killed?
Due to their shared brain, Gabriel can make Madison believe she is inside her home by projecting fictitious images upon her. Gabriel then assumes her body and begins killing people one at a time. Madison has a tendency to awaken from the trance Gabriel has placed her in, which is why she sometimes finds herself unexpectedly transferred to another place and witnesses Gabriel’s murders. It’s only what she believes she is doing in the moment where she is washing laundry at home. She (really, Gabriel) is actually killing Dr. Weaver in her home.
Who is the woman who descends from the attic?
The person imprisoned in Madison’s attic is Serena May, the mother of Emily and Gabriel. Serena is Gabriel’s second-to-last victim; Sydney, Madison’s sister, is his final victim. Serena breaks free and falls through the roof before Gabriel can finish her.
Police detain Madison because they think she abducted Serena. They think Madison’s motivation is because her treatment has ceased working, and she is going around eliminating Dr. Weaver (and crew) and her mother one at a time. As a group of female prisoners plan to start beating Madison up, Madison is captured and locked up alongside them. When they arrive, they want to be executed.
Explaining the Malignant Ending
Malignant’s climax reveals that Madison is home to Gabriel, who emerges from the back of her head and seizes possession of her body. While performing his horrible crimes, Gabriel is able to hold Madison in a trance. Gabriel believes he has killed Sidney and Serena, however eventually it is revealed that these were just images that Madison projected onto Gabriel.
Gabriel visits Serena at the hospital after the carnage at the police station. Sidney is hit with a cot, and Gabriel closes in to finish her off. Madison receives a message from Sidney when she informs her that Gabriel is the one who has been murdering Madison’s unborn children. Madison becomes enraged by this and regains mental control. She follows that by giving Gabriel a fake reality. She understands that if Gabriel could trap Madison, she can do the same for him.
Madison confines Gabriel to a deep recess of her mind, warning him that she’ll be ready if he makes an attempt to emerge. Madison also accepts the idea that since Gabriel and her shared a body, if Gabriel had extraordinary strength, then too would she. The movie ends with a hug between Madison and Sidney after she effortlessly throws the bed off of him.
Evil Film: When will Gabriel return?
Well, Gabriel can, but Madison has entire control over her mind, her body, and all of her newly acquired skills, including the ability to transmit her thoughts to a radio. Madison will be far too powerful for Gabriel to accomplish much the second time around, even if he can reappear. Malignant is a good superhero/villian genesis narrative, but I don’t think the film should be forced into a sequel.
