M3gan (2023): 6.5/10

Director: Gerard Johnstone
Runtime: 102mins

When robotics engineer Gemma (Williams) suddenly becomes the legal guardian to orphaned niece Cady (McGraw), it’s clear she is not ready for the responsibility. Her latest prototype M3gan could be the answer. M3gan may appear to be the perfect child companion, but with a mix of ‘Child’s Play’, ‘The Terminator’, and a sprinkle of ‘Small Soldiers’ and ‘Robocop’ thrown into the melting pot, it’s clear she’s going to be anything but.

M3gan has enjoyed unexpected success since its release – it’s devilishly dark fun, even if its plot and surrounding parts feel underdeveloped and a little derivative – but that’s not what we’re here for, right? M3gan’s demeanour becomes more menacing as the action unfolds, with some great set pieces and chase sequences.

After a huge spike in the film’s interest from younger demographics, reshoots reportedly took place in order to tone down the gore. Although still aggressive and hostile in nature, much of the climactic violent moments happen off-screen. Even so, it’s a rip roaring time for the most part, that’s sure to spawn further sequels.
