The Quiet Movie Explained

I’ll be explaining the American psychological thriller movie The Quiet today. Dot is a teenage girl who is deaf and mute. She has few friends and is frequently alone due to her disabilities. Dot has been cared for by her godmother’s family since the recent passing of her sole father. Nina, her new god-sister, despises Dot without cause because she is not used to having a sibling. They both attend the same school where Nina is a popular girl and Dot is a social outcast. In the first scene, Dot’s disability is ridiculed by Nina and her obnoxious cheerleaders.

When the guidance counsellor for the school notices this, she invites Dot to sit at her table for lunch. Dot declines and retreats to her preferred location in the school, a cubicle. When she is by herself, she feels considerably more secure and less lonely. Her joy is short-lived, however, as Nina discovers her and yanks her out in a fury for the ride home. Olivia, Nina’s mother, urges her to let Dot feel at home, but Nina is unconcerned. She doesn’t feel obligated to do Dot any favours because it wasn’t her decision to take her home. Paul, Nina’s father, finds Olivia unconscious in the living room when he gets home in the evening.

She struggles with despair and a drinking addiction. She takes a number of medications, so Paul looks after her and puts her to bed. He sees the girls’ awkward quiet when he returns to the dinner table. He recommends they teach Dot sign language to ease the tension, but Nina interrupts him and walks away. Nina and her friends are chattering as usual the next day during lunch. The subject of virginity is brought up, and Nina’s friend Michelle makes fun of her for being a virgin at the age of 17. She is reserved when it comes to dating even though she can have any man she wants. Dot, in the meantime, sees the school’s unoccupied music room and seizes the chance to practise the piano.

She used to practise while she could still hear, so even now, without the benefit of hearing the music, she still plays fairly well. When one of Conner’s fellow popular guys hears her perform, he falls head over heels for her. As his friend speaks up, he continues to stare at her for a while before glancing away. Dot later runs into Nina in the loo. She attempts to keep to herself, but Nina coercively insists her wear lipstick. When Dot looks in the mirror, she sees that Nina purposefully put lipstick all over her lips, just as she begins to believe that this could be a special time for the two of them. Dot struggles to get to sleep that night since she misses her father.

She finds Nina’s bedroom door is open as she steps outdoors for some fresh air. She peeks and discovers Nina and her father Paul sharing a bed. She is so much disturbed by the sight that she immediately returns to her room. Nina requests permission from her parents to spend the night at Michelle’s at supper the next day. Although Olivia pushes her to attend, Paul forbids it. Nina attempts to woo Paul into letting her go by rubbing her foot up his leg below the table, but he remains stubborn. He stays silent, which she interprets as a yes and dials Michelle. Olivia constantly deviates from Paul, which enrages him. They had a brief disagreement before he leaves.

Dot gives Olivia a note when she is by herself and requests permission to take her to the movies. Dot accepts Paul’s offer to drive her there despite her discomfort. Save for Nina and her group in the middle row, the theatre is empty. When Conner notices Dot sitting alone, the others dissuade him from approaching her. Although Nina has some sympathy for her, she maintains her act of indifference. When she closes her ears to experience what it would be like to be deaf, Dot notices her tripping. But when she sees Dot looking down at her, she pauses. Dot continues to ruminate about her previous interaction with Nina throughout the night. She pretends to be asleep until she notices Paul walking downstairs all of a sudden.

He touches her hair while claiming to be ill. He appears to understand that what he is doing with his daughter is immoral, but after going so far, he is powerless to stop. Dot’s presence was supposed to deter him from entering Nina’s room, so he consented to take her in, but it was obvious that this wasn’t the case. Dot is playing the piano by herself at home in the scene that follows. Nina sneaks into the house after school and stands in the doorway to watch her play. Dot screams incoherently as a piano wire snaps out of nowhere. When Nina realises Dot had been listening to them all along, she stops in disbelief. She doesn’t call her to tell her the truth and makes the excuse that she just arrived home. Nina and Dot have their first meal together the following day at lunch.

Dot is perplexed as Nina starts to fill her in on minor details of her time spent alone with her father. She is obviously doing it to elicit a response from her, but Dot doesn’t flinch. She also says before she leaves that she plans to kill Paul at night using Michelle’s gun. Dot still ignores her despite her repeated requests for attention out of concern that she could be telling the truth. She enters the music room to play the piano in an effort to distract herself from Nina. She finds Conner looking at her through the door this time. She tries to leave as she starts to feel uneasy, but the man stops her. To collaborate on a lab report, he asks her out on a date. When she shows him the finished report, his plan falls apart.

The family is having dinner together that evening when Conner unexpectedly knocks on the door. To review the lab results, he invites Dot to the library. Just as Michelle comes and brings Nina a bag, she reluctantly accepts. Dot is concerned that Nina might be preparing to murder Paul because she recalled that she had mentioned Michelle’s gun. Dot and Connor are shown in the next scene sitting in a diner. After briefly discussing the report with her, he finally expresses his feelings for her. He talks in-depth about how he envisions having a sexual encounter with her while supposing that she cannot hear him.

Dot assumes Nina did something wrong when she sees an ambulance suddenly approaching her house. She returns home in a hurry and is happy to see that everyone is okay. She then moves in the direction of Nina’s room as she hears Paul taking off her clothes. Dot damages a statue to assist Nina because she seems really frustrated with her father’s actions. The disturbance is cut short by the noise, and Paul goes back to his room. As Dot snuck into the bed and held Nina as she fell asleep, Nina was left in her bed sobbing. The next scene shows Nina conversing to Dot while ironing her cheerleading gear. She burns the face off a teddy bear to make a point and makes a pledge to use the iron to kill Paul that evening.

Dot is still under the notion that Nina is unaware of her hearing abilities. She therefore acts as though she was unaware of her strategy. Later that day, Nina and Michelle support the basketball squad for the school. Conner is on the team, but he performs so poorly that the coach benched him right away. Conner and Dot spend some time together by the pool after the game. Conner begins chatting about his sex life because he believes she cannot hear him. Dot suddenly removes her top, and the two start making out by the pool. Olivia says that Nina and Conner would make a wonderful couple while you’re at home. Paul becomes enraged by the remark and accuses her of forcing her daughter to dress like a slut.

Conner no longer finds Olivia attractive after talking with her and accepting her invitation to bed. After cheering all day, Nina goes home at midnight and is exhausted. Paul moves on her while giving her a handbag as a gift. Also, we see Olivia awake in her bedroom. She appears to be aware of what is happening, yet she does nothing to prevent her husband. Paul is asked to close his eyes by Nina because she wants to surprise him. She approaches him with a hot iron when he follows her instructions. Dot enters the room and interrupts them just as she is about to burn his face. Nina steps back and announces that she is expecting.

Paul finds the idea of becoming a grandparent abhorrent. So when Nina asks him for $1,000 for an abortion, he agrees to give it to her the following day. Nina then returns to Dot’s room and admits that she lacked the courage to murder him. The school dance is the next day. Dot borrows a dress from Nina for the evening. She admits that she lied about being pregnant while the girls get ready. In truth, she intends to take the $1,000 and flee to another state. She intends to work as a stripper in the new city and earn a fortune. She confesses and this time doesn’t make Dot seem like a clown when she puts lipstick on her.

While searching for Nina later, Paul discovers tampons in her suitcase. He suspects she is lying about the pregnancy because she claimed she hadn’t had her period in more than six weeks. He asks her to be honest as he displays the tampon. He rejects Nina’s attempt to concoct a lie. He starts to push himself on her and slap her face. Despite seeing her kid sob in misery, Olivia does nothing. Dot can hear the screams and tears as well. She halts her performance, tears a piano wire out, and moves to the bedroom. She suffocates Paul with the wire while yelling at him to leave Nina alone while he is preoccupied. She stops shortly after, and he collapses to the ground. Nina is stunned.

When Olivia enters the upstairs, she scolds Dot for killing her father. She is more surprised that Dot can speak than she is that her husband is gone. Michelle rings the doorbell at the same moment to come get them for the school dance. The females hastily change into new clothing while storing the bloody ones in a bag. They then take the bag and leave for school to give the impression that everything is normal. Dot dances with Conner in school, but she is preoccupied and doesn’t see him. She grabs the bag and waits for the party to end while hiding in the lavatory. Olivia is in the bedroom at this time, her face expressionless as she examines Paul’s lifeless body.

Long ago, she had grown tired of being in love with him. She simply regrets that she lacked the will to defend her kid from a monster like him. Conner screams Dot’s name from another location as she is leaving the party and is startled to see her turn around. He learns that she can hear him after all. He also understands that she is aware of all of his dirty secrets after the reveal. For betraying him and invading his private, he labels her a maniac. Dot apologises but is pushed away. She concentrates on more crucial issues because she is aware that he won’t give her a chance right now. She fetches Nina from the restroom and drives her to a brook in the area.

They bury the clothes and backpack with the intention of getting rid of the body later. Dot responds that she wanted to be like her father, who was also deaf and mute, when Nina questions her about why she claimed to be deaf all this time. The girls then swiftly return home, much to the amazement of everyone. Olivia is being led away in handcuffs as police surround their home. They inquire as to what transpired, and Olivia responds that she killed Paul. To Nina, she also extends her regret for what she done. Nina is aware of the true motivation behind the apology, despite the fact that the police believe it is because she killed her father. The girls watch as Oliva is driven away by the police in the final scene. Subscribe for more videos like this, turn on the notification, and leave a like to help the channel out. Thankyou.
