Weird The AlYankovic Story (2022): 7.5/10
Director: Eric Appel
Runtime: 108mins
⠀
Daniel Radcliffe (‘Swiss Army Man’) dons the Weird Al frizzy hair piece and 80’s ‘tache in this hilarious parody of Yankovic’s upbringing and ongoing stardom, now available to stream on the Roku Channel.
Co-written by the man himself (so of course it’s quirky), the film details many aspects of the artist’s life that may or may not be true – quite clearly the latter in most cases.
⠀
It’s a hilarious, wild ride right from the first minute, as young Al Yankovic is given an accordion as a present by his cash-strapped mum Mary – much to the revulsion of father Nick, played by an aggressive and obnoxious Toby Huss (‘Copshop’),
who gives the door-to-door salesman what for. The film’s wackiness and outrageousness continues throughout, poking fun at the generic musical biopic formula.
⠀
Radcliffe throws himself into the titular role and brings a real engrossing energy that’s hard to ignore. Much of Yankovic’s back catalogue is made up of catchy parody tunes,
some of which have been re-recorded for the film – but the same can also be said of the original song in the film’s credits. A feverishly good time.
